The cleaning materials we use in our homes contain many chemicals.

However, zero waste If we consider that our philosophy also includes minimizing the packaging material we use, we will try to remove liquid soap, which is the cleaning material we use most during the day, from our lives. natural soap making It is possible to start with.

Before moving on to making natural soap, it is useful to talk about liquid soap, its contents and harms.

Liquid Soap Content

Liquid hand soap is produced similarly to the manufacture of dishwashing liquid.

Mainly used for foaming Sodium Lauryl Sulphate may cause skin irritation. However, these chemicals can be discharged from our sinks and return to our homes with the biological treatment systems of municipalities, or they can mix with other water sources and threaten fish and other living things.

Chemicals in Cosmetic Products and Their Hazards to Health

Antibacterial liquid soaps, on the other hand, threaten health significantly with their triclosan content. Studies show that triclosan, which is used to kill microbes, negatively affects muscle functions and skeletal structure.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences The study, published in the latest issue of the medical journal named Triclosan, tested the effects of triclosan on mice and fish.

Mice exposed to triclosan had a 20 percent decrease in heart function within 25 minutes and an 1 percent decrease in arm grip strength for 18 hour.

However, the substance tirclosan, which destroys harmful bacteria in the body, It also harms health by killing beneficial bacteria.

Triclosan can interact with chlorine in water and turn into carcinogenic substances chloroform and dioxin, and when absorbed by the skin, it can be directly converted. carcinogenic effect can create.

Is Every Solid Soap Natural Soap?

Considering the harmful effects of liquid soaps on people and nature and reducing packaging waste within the scope of zero waste, it is undoubtedly a healthier choice to go back to the past and use solid soap.

However, another point that should not be forgotten is to prefer natural soaps when choosing solid soap and to be very careful during the selection process.

Chemical Engineer Betül Şahin especially recommends vegetable oil soaps obtained by cold pressing method and advises to be cautious about hand soaps: “Animal fats are used to increase the hardness and foam of soaps. They also contain lard.

In addition, there is a risk of being toxic (poisonous) as pesticide residues can be found in such oils.”

The Ministry of Health has no sanction for products that qualify as natural. Only the use of the word 'health' is prohibited, when this is the case, anyone can easily include the word 'natural' on the packaging of the product they produce.

For this reason, it is necessary to stay away from products that read 'Natural Olive Oil' and 'One Hundred Percent Olive Oil'. Because the soaps promoted in this way are a complete chemical wonder.

Soap to buy the best way to tell if it's natural soap Label contains the following content: water, natural oils (almond, chamomile, laurel etc.), Sodium Hydroxide/Caustic (NaOH), salt (NaCl) and glycerine.

The potential problem with natural soap is that it has a high pH value. Natural soap has a PH of 9. When rinsed with water, this level goes down to 7-7,5 with basic media. For this reason, in the first stage, the skin becomes dry and has a problem of adaptation, but in a short time the moisture content is balanced.

There are soaps with adjusted pH in the market, but harmful chemicals are used to balance the pH and the soap ceases to be natural.

What is Natural Soap?

Natural soap means avoiding any chemicals that may be toxic in the content of the soap, or any method or material that raises suspicion in production. In other words, it means no artificial dyes, perfumes or additives are used.

Of course, making soap for hobby purposes is also a choice, but if you set out to make handmade soap, why shouldn't this product be completely reliable for you, your family and your children?

What Ingredients Is Natural Soap Made With?

Before asking the question of how to make natural soap, our first question is "What is Soap?" should be. At the heart of all soap recipes are two main ingredients: caustic, chemically called sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and oil.

In a very simple but controlled process, these two ingredients are chemically bonded to a new compound – Soap!

Soap making is essentially a chemical reaction between oils, which are acids, and caustic, which is a base. When the two materials react, they will form an entirely new material whose PH will be nearly neutral.

If you wish, you can add essence to your soap by adding natural oils such as lavender oil, orange oil, coconut oil, clove oil.

What is caustic?

It is a white hydrating substance. It is a basic compound used in chemistry and many industries. Caustic, which has no odor, dissolves easily in water and turns into a soft and slippery solution that feels like soap.

what is caustic

It is often used as a drain opener. Caustic, which has an itchy effect when touched with bare hands, does not occur naturally but is fairly easy to manufacture.

Is Caustic Harmful?

Caustic is a very harmful (corrosive) material when used unconsciously. For this reason, care should be taken to wear protective clothing in soap making, not to inhale the caustic directly, and not to have children or animals around.

Is It Possible To Make Natural Soap Without Caustic?

It is not possible to make your own natural soap without caustic. Many people avoid soap making because the thought of introducing caustic soda into personal care products scares or repels them.

If you want to make soap, but Sodium hydroxide so if you are still not sure about the use of caustic, you can already melt a soap and use it. You can melt the soap and add the essences and ingredients you want and pour it into the molds.

Is Soap Making From Ash Water Safe?

Ash water is an alkali, just like caustic. Since there was no ready-made caustic in ancient times, it was used for making natural soap. Ash water has a sink cleaning feature and its Ph is 12 and above like caustic and it is caustic like caustic.

lye soap

The only difference with lye is that caustic production is standard and you can know the ratio. However, since we do not know which material turns into ash as a result of the combustion of ash in the formation of ash, we cannot know its purity and alkaline value clearly.

For this reason, it is possible to encounter some caustic when it reacts with oil.

It's also not a 70% reliable method of making natural soap, as foreign materials may also be mixed with the ash you buy, and our skin absorbs 100% of everything we put on it.

Why Olive Oil in Natural Soap Making

Olive oil cold soap, which is produced only from pure olive oil and contains beneficial components such as beta carotene, vitamin E, squalene, unique to olive oil, is the most preferred among natural soaps because it does not apply high heat treatment.

Monounsaturated primarily oleic acid, which is separated from glycerol in olive oil soap. It binds Na (Sodium) at the optimum rate and thus reduces the irritating effect of Na.

Unsaponifiable monounsaturated fatty acids are more resistant to oxidation than polyunsaturated fatty acids in other vegetable oils.

Olive oil soap; It does not cause irritation and hardening on the skin and has a softening effect. About 70% of cold process soap consists of oil and therefore its cost is much higher than other commercial soaps.

For this reason, olive oil is the most preferred oil in natural soap making.

Fabrication:

1) Take all your safety precautions before you start making natural soap. Put on your gloves, put on your mask, put on your safety glasses and put on a long sleeved suit. Work in an open area with good ventilation, away from animals and children.

2) First, caustic is poured little by little into the water in a bowl and mixed thoroughly with the help of a wooden stick. Since caustic is a chemical that reacts quickly when it comes into contact with water, adding it slowly into the water will prevent the possibility of splashing. Some smoke may occur during mixing, it is very important at this point not to breathe the smoke and to ventilate the inside thoroughly.

3) The mixture, which is formed by the reaction of caustic with water, reaches approximately 75 degrees. After waiting for 15 minutes, the mixture will automatically drop to 45 degrees.

5) When the mixing process is completed, the mixture will take on a thick consistency like boza and the saponification process will be completed. At this stage, in order to give essence to the soap, 20-30 drops of any oil of your choice, such as lavender oil, coconut oil, cinnamon oil, orange oil You can add it and mix it again.
